Borgata's First Legal Sports Bet
Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa became the first Atlantic City casino to allow legal sports betting under New Jersey's new sports betting regulations. The historic bet came just three days after New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill that was unanimously passed by the state legislature, creating a regulatory environment for licensed casinos to keep legal sports books.
"This is a proud day for Bogata and a proud day for New Jersey," said Marcus Glover, president and chief operating officer of Bogata Hotel Casino and Spa. "Today marks a whole new era for New Jersey sports entertainment. What we're looking forward to will bring new excitement, excitement, and economic benefits to our community. Bogata is proud to list today's first of the many innovative things we've achieved in celebrating our first 15 years in Atlantic City."
The honor of making his first sports bet at the Atlantic City Casino went to Hall of Fame basketball legend Julius Erving. Dr. J, a talented star of the Philadelphia 76ers and a longtime guest of Borgata, received an invitation from the resort to make a historic bet. The Philadelphia NBA legend maintained his allegiance to his team's hometown, but he went from basketball to football when he made his first bet in Borgata.
"I bet the Eagles would repeat themselves," said Irving, lifting his ticket after betting $5 on the Philadelphia NFL team to win the Pro Football Championship. At the time of the bet, the Borgata betting line for the Eagles to repeat as champions was 8 to 1.
At the next betting window, Senator Steve Sweeney, who was instrumental in passing New Jersey's sports betting bill with Dr. J, bet $200 on the Green Bay Packers to win the professional football championship.
While both proudly displaying their first tickets for customers and the media gathered for the event, Dr. J asked Chairman Sweeney about his bet. Dr. J, who learned that Sweeney had made a competitive bet on the Packers, said, "Then you go down."
As the only Atlantic City casino with existing racing books, Borgata was uniquely ready to go into business quickly. Borgata Race Books has been renamed Borgata Race & Sports Book, and will remain in its original location.
Significant additional plans are in the final stages of the design to supplement the existing Bogata Race & Sportsbook facilities. Details and timelines for these improvements will be announced in the coming weeks.
As part of MGM Resorts International, Borgata brings the company's abundance of sportsbook experience to its new operations. MGM Resorts International has more than 25 years of experience running sportswear in Nevada, and its resorts create more than 4 million sportswear annually with handles valued at over $1 billion per year.
Sports and sports betting are key entertainment experiences that drive continued consumer engagement. "As Bogata celebrates 15 years as a leader and innovator in the Atlantic City market, we are committed to providing the best sportsbook environment for our customers to enjoy. After decades of successfully running sportsbooks in Nevada and building trust with both customers and regulators, Bogata and MGM Resorts are well established as leaders in sports betting," said Mr. Glover.
